You could always buy gold and then a carry, it was just shady and motivated hackers to steal your account. You could always do a favor IRL for your friend to get a carry You could always become the GM's girlfriend to get a carry. That is not P2W, because carries don't get you gear you can't get anyway by playing.

I hope more people buy and enjoy Monster Hunter: Wilds when it releases. Monster Hunter has always been a hub-based thing, but it's been purely a multiplayer experience, through and through. I think it has a chance to essentially be an MMO and have a large, consistent player base. Most people are confused by Capcom's monetization though, and fans of Capcom's games have pointed out that their system hasn't changed over the years. The Monster Hunter games, especially, have only had cosmetic items cost real money. Everything else requires just a ton of grinding, but the grinding is straight-forward and the whole point of the game so it doesn't feel like a chore. There's no progression skips or anything.

pay to win, doesn't work in mmo's as that ruins the point of them, just have free game and a sub for bonus. such that power is capped at a sub

GW2 is great at using cosmetics to fund the game while also having plenty of cosmetics included for free

TBH the description sounds boring, seems like a boring seasonal game.

I heard about this game because of the main dev no bullshit approach to game development and just creating their vision without "the message" but damn, this game looks amazing. Both from the gameplay and visual perspective. I don't like isometric games, but this one looks too good to pass on since I love souls games. You got me convinced at 4 minute mark.

The only real issue with a subscription model is the barrier to entry isn't enough to stop bots or griefers anymore.

I think it’s better to have a choice to pay instead of paying monthly. With a free game, I can play it first, then if I enjoy it, I can choose to support the developers by purchasing what *I* think is worth my cash. However, this is where I believe developers get the free market wrong by charging way too much for items. That said, I understand they need to pay for the product and pay employees, but just make the items convenient, or worthy enough for me to *want* to give them the same $15 sub cost as “non-pay-to-win” games and both the customer and the developer wins. That said, I know that can also be hard to do, but that should be the goal imo.

Basically every MMO progression base is time. Every company understand that if they are not WOW or FFXIV (which also value time equals progression in a monthly basis) then the easiest platform is P2W / F2P concept. Time will always be money.

The business model that most MMORPGS follow is dead on arrival: 1. Get investors or carve out budgets from a successful studio or publisher that you'll then need to pay back 10 times overs 2. Because of this, the first thing they think about is monetization instead of how can we make the game loop better, so people WANT to buy things. 3. Overfocus on monetization, leading to issues like we see with Diablo IV, Lost Ark, Black Desert Online etc. etc. 4. INJECTED INCONVENIENCE that is unfun and makes players leave. 5. "Wow these MMORPGs make no money" comments leading to the overall industry being wary of investing in them again. I 100% believe the road to building a good MMORPG would be one that takes over 30 years. So that 1. You can release smaller games that have a through-line in the lore and connect to each other but can be made more cheaply and sold at a "higher margin" lets say. 2. Take profits from those games and build upon that brand to then work on the real MMORPG It's basically the way that WoW and FInal Fantasy 14 *League of Legends, Dota 2* all did it this way.

As long as ppl buy it there will be P2W. I don't like the subscription model either it forces you to play or your money was wasted.

MMO has been a dead genre for a while (10+ years?), due to P2W, and nothing will bring it back. Because people wont stop spending, making the P2W model very sucessfull. As much as we love those games, we must face this fact. The option is to play coop with friends, or single player games. Its sad, but nothing we can do about it. Its like understanding that girl we love will never love us back, accepting it, and moving on. Time to move on guys. Stop hoping for a new good MMO, wont happen.

I stopped playing these p2w games alltoguether, You can avoid them if You really want.

The thing is we were introduced to it in a way that we accepted and it simply evolved. I agree with sub model with box price but if it is box price + sub + X-Pac every 2 years where like mounts are introduced and anyone that didn't pay can't have it without paying the X-Pac this already predatory and this is was the initial way they made player accept it... A live service should not be this way to be honest... Sub and every X-Pac would be for everyone since you are already paying a lot in subs alone... I understand this is not a popular opinion but just look at other subscription services, you pay a flat fee and any updates are part of the fee... Sure you might have different levels of subs that guarantee different levels of access but that is less predatory than forcing all players to buy the X-Pac (that they might not like) just to be able to play with other players, this is because everyone feels like they have to so everyone is playing on the new X-Pac...

I am ALL FOR subscriptions, and growing up a gamer I am more than willing to fork out some money to buy a sub for my kids or younger student siblings, it's not that expensive man, especially compared to the ridiculous amount of money you'd have to pay in these F2P MMO's to stay even remotely late game relevant.

Monsters & Memories is an upcoming MMO that reminds Everquest, their business model is P2P with no microtransactions. Not a AAA title, but pretty cool anyway

My limit for P2W is don't even buy a game that has P2W in it. How can you on one hand say you don't want P2W in your favorite games then buy games that have P2W. Even if you don't buy into the P2W mechanics you're still supporting these games and in turn perpetuating more games to be made with P2W.

ESO requires subscription just to have a functioning backpack. Ridiculous. And they're kinda shooting themselves in the foot, cause i'd like to return to it, check out the new stuff, and if i like it - stay and subcribe. But I know that without subbing i wont even get a chance to play normaly, so they're losing me as a potential paying customer. Dumb, dated and out of touch approach to monetization. It will forever remain mystery to me, why companies dont just copy RIOT's model, that has proven to be highly lucrative AND keeping customers happy. But no. Greed always prevails.

pretty sure pax dei said the monthly sub was to keep your plots going, don't think that falls into ptw, its basically what all old style mmo's used to do. So if you don't want to have a plot, you don't have to pay a sub fee, only the box price.

I feel this so much. My biggest hope is just, that the bubble will somehow someday explode and were back at least for games that are mode for fun and maybe some ways to support the devs further. I am totally fine to play MMOs that are somehow smaller, but just with a nice and stable community and good scaleable content. That would be great.
